Sculptra Q&A

What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra is an FDA-approved gel-like injectable that boosts collagen production. Collagen is a protein that your body commonly uses to support cell and tissue structure and strength.

By working as a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator, Sculptra allows your body to absorb its PLLA microparticles, triggering collagen growth.

Reformed collagen strands result in the smoothing of your cheek wrinkles and smile lines, and they improve your skin’s overall quality and glow.

What are the benefits of Sculptra?

Sculptra treats the cause of facial aging and not just the symptoms. It works more immediately than collagen creams or supplements by directly influencing collagen production.

Sculptra can improve:

  • Cheek wrinkles
  • Smile lines
  • Marionette lines (lines from your mouth to chin)
  • Your skin complexion
  • Facial contouring
  • Recessed areas of skin
  • Fat loss (lipoatrophy, due to HIV)

Sculptra can last up to two years. You may need several appointments, depending on your cosmetic goals.

What happens before a Sculptra procedure?

Your provider at MediFreda performs a thorough exam of your skin and discusses your cosmetic ambitions.

Be sure to communicate with your provider if you have any allergies or if you've had previous cosmetic procedures.

You can expect your provider to take pictures of you to monitor your progress before the treatment and over the course of your Sculptra sessions.

They will also inform you of any side effects associated with the procedure.

What happens during a Sculptra procedure?

Your provider performs the procedure at the MediFreda office, and they begin by cleaning the injection site and numbing your skin so you’re comfortable.

During the procedure, your provider injects the filler into your specified dermal plane — this is where collagen supports your skin’s structure. Over time, Sculptra improves the natural collagen production in these locations.

You may feel a slight pinching sensation, but you shouldn’t feel any pain. Depending on how much collagen you’ve lost, you may need multiple injections per appointment and several sessions to see optimal results. It’s normal to schedule three Sculptra procedures over the course of a few months.

Side effects may include redness, swelling, bruising, injection site pain, and itching. Your provider may recommend using an ice pack following the procedure, refraining from using makeup or oils for a few days, and avoiding rigorous exercise for a day or so.
